Asterisk in abstract causes italics

An asterisk as a scientific symbol seems to cause italics in the abstract field. See https://vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/items/eaedc88b-780e-4d4a-973f-535e0e69c40b. I have played around with it a bit and copied the symbol from the journal page but haven't been able to fix it.
